Harleysville, Franconia
In the early 18th century, Philadelphia speculators purchased large tracts of land, which they then divided into smaller parcels of land and sold to the arriving settlers.
In March 1741, Philadelphia's Court of Quarter Sessions divided the Salford area into the townships of Upper and Lower Salford, in which Harleysville is located. Even though many of the newly arriving settlers were Dutch and Swiss, the area took the name of Salford after an English city.
In the 1950s, Lower Salford slowly began to suburbanize through the introduction of new cultures and new development into an area that had been largely agricultural.
Today, with a population well surpassing several thousand and still growing, the future of Lower Salford and Harleysville looks bright. The residents of the present can look back to those who came before and draw strength from their courage, faith and stability.
