Flourtown, Lafayette Hill
Straddling the townships of Whitemarsh and Springfield, the village of Flourtown combines a dynamic business environment with a sense of tradition. National store chains stand side by side with family-owned shops, and new offices and restaurants are taking root in historic buildings that date from the Colonial period.
The community was founded in the mid-18th century and named for the principal product of its mills. Many homes, inns and taverns along Bethlehem Pike survive from this early period and are still in use. Halliganšs Pub, a popular lunch and nightspot, occupies a building erected in 1765. The Green Inn, built in 1811, is now the Sorella Rose restaurant. The Black Horse Inn, which was built on the pike in 1744, has attracted international attention as residents and business owners have united to ensure its preservation.
As the commercial and retail center of Springfield Township, Flourtown is the home of a community-minded business association. A related group, a coalition of residents, business leaders and government officials known as the Flourtown-Erdenheim Enhancement Association, was founded in 2001 to beautify Bethlehem Pike and transform it into a more pedestrian-friendly destination for shoppers by 2013.
